3.Tatezuna?

Many visitors to Kamigamo Shrine are deeply impressed by the cone-shaped sand mounds within the shrine grounds, known as “Tatezuna.”

While seemingly simple mounds of sand, these Tatezuna are actually a crucial element, representing the very foundation of the faith at Kamigamo Shrine. This chapter will clearly explain the meaning, origin, and relationship between Tatezuna and the blessings it bestows.

3.1 The Meaning and Mythological Background of Tatezuna
Tatezuna are sacred sand mounds considered to be Yorishiro (objects that serve as vessels for deities) when they descend to this land. At Kamigamo Shrine, they are said to symbolize the place where the principal deity, Kamowakeikazuch no Okami, descended.

According to mythology, Kamo Wakeikazuchi no Okami descended to Koyama (Sacred Mountain), and Tatezuna symbolically represents this sacred mountain. In other words, Tatezuna are not merely decorations, but sacred places that connect gods and humans.

Before the current shrine buildings were constructed, ancient rituals centered on natural objects like these, rather than buildings, to worship deities. Tatezuna are valuable examples that convey this ancient Japanese form of nature worship.

3.2 Why the Conical Shape? | Relationship with Onmyodo (Japanese Yin-Yang Way)
The conical shape of Tatezuna has a deep meaning.

This shape is thought to represent not only the form of Koyama, but also the connection between heaven and earth. With its tip pointing towards the heavens and its base spreading to the earth, it has been considered a symbol of connecting the energies of heaven and earth.

It is also believed to be related to Onmyōdō, which developed during the Heian period. In Onmyōdō,
・Cone shape = a shape that gathers and circulates energy
・Sand = a symbol of purity and purification

Therefore, the standing sand has played a role as a “device that purifies the space and attracts good energy.”
This philosophy still influences Kyoto’s gardens and shrine rituals today.

3.3 The Relationship Between Standing Sand and Blessings
One of the reasons why the blessings of Kamigamo Shrine are said to be “amazing” is the presence of this standing sand.

The standing sand is considered a powerful symbol of purification and regeneration, and is associated with the following blessings:
・Protection from evil and warding off negative energy
The sand is believed to absorb impurities and purify the mind and body.
・Reset and restart of luck
Many people feel their minds become more settled when they see the standing sand before a turning point in their lives or a new challenge.
・Overall luck improvement through purification of the space
A notable characteristic is that many visitors come hoping for an overall improvement in their luck, rather than having a specific wish granted.

Please note that the sand mounds are not meant to be touched or taken home. It is believed that viewing them with your eyes and understanding their meaning deepens your connection to the blessings received.
