1.Kamigamo Shrine?

Kamigamo Shrine, located in Kita Ward, Kyoto City, is one of Kyoto’s oldest shrines, and its official name is “Kamowakeikazuchi Shrine” It is also known as the setting for the Aoi Matsuri, one of Kyoto’s three major festivals, and its ancient beliefs and rituals continue to be passed down to this day.

1.1 The Formal Name and History of Kamigamo Shrine
The formal name of Kamigamo Shrine is Kamowakeikazuchi Shrine, and it is said to have been founded before the 6th year of Emperor Tenmu’s reign (677 AD). It has been located in this area since before the relocation of the capital to Heian-kyo, and has played an important role as a guardian deity of Kyoto, the capital city.

It was revered as the tutelary deity of the Kamo clan and has a history of receiving deep faith from the imperial court as a shrine for the protection of the nation and the imperial city. Even today, the shrine grounds retain architecture and rituals that strongly reflect ancient forms of worship, and it is highly regarded as a shrine where one can feel the original landscape of Japan.

Kamigamo Shrine was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1994 (Heisei 6) as one of the constituent assets of “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.”

The main reasons for its registration are:
・The preservation of the architectural style of shrines dating back to the Heian period in excellent condition.

The main deity enshrined at Kamigamo Shrine is Kamowakeikazuch no Okami.

This deity is the god who controls thunder, and is believed to offer strong blessings such as:

・Protection from disaster
・Good fortune and victory

Thunder, being a source of both “disaster” and “blessing (rain),” has been worshipped as a symbol of purification and regeneration.
